The Copaiba and CBD Pathway

In the early 1990’s, scientists working to understand the exact mechanisms through which cannabis interacts with our bodies came to discover a new system. It was named the Endocannabinoid System (ECS) because it contains a network of naturally occurring internal compounds, known as endocannabinoids, which operate in much the same way as the healthy cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant.

The ECS is actually a 3-tiered system made up of these endocannabinoids, the enzymes that break them down, and at least 2 key receptors:

  • CB1: These are found mostly in the brain, and also throughout the body, especially in the musculoskeletal tissues of the spinal cord.
  • CB2: These are found mostly throughout the body, especially in the nervous, immune, and digestive systems. Some CB2 receptors can also be found in the brain.

We now know that the Endocannabinoid System is of vast importance because it is our body’s main regulatory system, which helps to ensure that we stay in an optimal state of internal balance. It does this by using endocannabinoids to trigger CB1 and CB2 receptors in ways that help to properly regulate a whole host of internal processes, including our:

  • Metabolism
  • Hormone Levels
  • Body Temperature
  • Immune Responses
  • Inflammatory Responses
  • Digestion
  • Memory
  • Motor Functions

Just like any other system of our body, the ECS can become depleted, a condition known as Clinical Endocannabinoid Deficiency (CED). When this happens, the compounds in CBD (cannabidiol) and Copaiba can work to bring the ECS back to a state of health by:

  • Attaching directly to receptors
  • Inhibiting the breakdown, deactivation, and reuptake of endocannabinoids
  • Increasing endocannabinoid numbers in your brain’s synapses

Because of the unique compounds that Copaiba and CBD each contain, there are both similarities and differences in how they engage the CB1 and CB2 receptors and endocannabinoids in our brains and bodies.

Understanding How Copaiba Works

Copaiba is a dark resin found in the Copaiba trees that are native to South America. It contains a powerful cannabinoid called β-caryophyllene (BCP). Here are some of BCP’s specialized qualities:

  • It works by primarily attaching directly to CB2 receptors to activate the benefits of the ECS.
  • It boosts the functioning of endocannabinoids in the body to help ease CED.
  • In addition to being a cannabinoid it is also considered a terpene. This means it helps to give the Copaiba tree its unique odor, and can be used as an essential oil.

Because of its ability to attach directly to the CB2 receptor, BCP can positively assist with a whole host of health conditions in our bodies, including:

  • Reducing the inflammation that is a leading cause of chronic disease
  • Protecting the nervous system
  • Improving memory
  • Stimulating collagen production for vibrant, healthy skin
  • Relieving pain
  • Aiding in digestion
  • Protecting against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Diseases
  • Improving outcomes for stroke, brain, and spinal cord patients
  • Reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Helping support immune functions

Understanding How CBD Works

Here are some of CBD’s specialized qualities:

  • It does not bind directly to either CB1 or CB2. Instead, it works primarily by stopping the uptake, breakdown, and deactivation of existing endocannabinoids that attach directly to these receptors to help boost the ECS.
  • It boosts the number of endocannabinoids in the brain to help alleviate CED.
  • It can positively alter the binding affinity of certain compounds to CB1. For instance, CBD reduces the ability of THC, the psychoactive component found in cannabis, to attach to CB1. By doing so, it reduces the “high” that users sometimes experience. This allows medicinal patients to experience THC’s health benefits without as many disruptions to their daily schedules.

Much like Copaiba, CBD has been shown to be a powerhouse for helping people protect against many leading diseases and conditions, including:

  • Reducing stress, which is a leading cause of doctor’s visits
  • Assisting with weight loss
  • Decreasing epileptic seizures and episodes, especially in childhood cases
  • Relieving pain
  • Reducing inflammation
  • Inhibiting cancer tumor growth
  • Protecting against Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Diseases
  • Reducing symptoms of anxiety and PTSD
  • Treating antibiotic-resistant infections
  • Lowering symptoms of fibromyalgia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and migraines

The health-enhancing benefits of both Copaiba and CBD are enormous. Each share the ability to elevate your mind-body wellness in ways that sometimes intersect, yet also include their own unique advantages that can lead you successfully down the road to better health.
